Yesterday morning, in the presence of the Prefect of Naples Michele Di Bari, the Police Chief of Naples Maurizio Agricola, the Mayor of the Municipality of bacoli Josi Gerardo Della Ragione and the Vice President of the Jewish community of Naples Sandro Temin, the ceremony in memory of Giovanni Palatucci took place.
Former Acting Police Chief of Fiume, at the Vanvitelliano del Fusaro Park in Bacoli where three years ago an olive tree was planted and a plaque was placed in memory of the official, awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit and recognized as “Righteous Among the Nations” for having saved many foreign and Italian Jews from genocide.
The Police Director, since the autumn of 1943, when Fiume, Venezia Giulia and the entire Istrian area were annexed to the Third Reich through military occupation, did his utmost to save foreign and Italian Jews from genocide until he was arrested and deported to the Dachau extermination camp where he lost his life on 10 February 1945.
Civil and military authorities also participated in the commemoration.
