The Municipality of Torre Annunziata has asked RFI to immediately decommission the railway line TAnnunziata orre – Castellammare – Gragnano.
The initiative, proposed by the councilor for mobility Daniele Carotenuto, aims to eliminate the two level crossings that effectively separate the Rovigliano and Deriver neighborhoods and the industrial area from the rest of the city.
The railway line has seen a progressive decrease in passengers over the years, further reduced since the Castellammare – Gragnano terminal section was suspended.
“The railway line has a negative impact on the territory – stated the councilor for Mobility Daniele Carotenuto – the level crossings represent a barrier that does not allow the integration of the neighborhoods with the rest of the city and are a serious inconvenience because, not being guarded, they remain closed for a long time”.
Rfi and Unita' Grande Pompei have already planned the reconversion of the line into a light tram and cycle paths. While waiting for the project to be realized, the Municipality is asking for its immediate decommissioning.
"An inconvenience not only for residents but also for the thousands of people who come to our city - the mayor said - and for the various companies in our area that operate in that neighborhood. We have asked the competent authorities to proceed immediately with the decommissioning of the railway line and to establish an alternative bus service".
