Rome – A macabre discovery was made on Saturday afternoon in Villa Pamphili, one of the largest and most popular parks in the capital.
The lifeless bodies of a little girl and a woman were discovered a short distance from each other, in a green area near the Fontana del Giglio, on the side of the villa that overlooks Via Leone XIII. A double mystery that shook the entire city.
The body of the little girl, a newborn who is thought to be around six months old, was noticed around 16pm by some passers-by, lying near a hedge.
They were the ones who raised the alarm. The 118 paramedics immediately arrived on the scene and tried in vain to revive the little girl: her heart had already stopped beating.
During the initial investigations, the Flying Squad officers discovered, about 100 meters away, the body of a woman. The body was wrapped in a black sack, from which an arm was sticking out.
The remains, according to what has been leaked, are in an advanced state of decomposition, unlike the Baby. A detail that could suggest a different time frame in the deaths, but which will have to be clarified by the forensic medical examinations.
The Scientific Police also arrived on site, isolating the area and starting surveys to find useful traces. The investigations, coordinated by the prosecutor Antonio Verdi of the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office, are now focusing on the possible link between the two victims, a hypothesis that investigators consider probable.
The work of the forensic doctors will be decisive: the first external examination on the child would have revealed signs compatible with trauma, but the nature and exact cause of death will be clarified only by the autopsy.
The video surveillance cameras in the area, between the Aurelio and Monteverde neighborhoods, will be examined to try to identify who abandoned the two bodies in the park. A delicate investigative activity, continued throughout the afternoon of Saturday under the incredulous eyes of the many frequenters of the villa.
“We realized something serious had happened when the ambulances and patrols arrived,” says Andrea, a regular runner in the area. “It was just an ordinary Saturday, and it turned into a nightmare.”
Alessandro, another witness, moved his family away from the place where the body was found: "My wife immediately took the children away. It's terrible to think that something like this could happen in broad daylight, among people."
The Villa Pamphili tragedy comes just a few days after another disturbing case that has shaken the national news: in Vibonati, in the Salerno area, a nine-month-old child was admitted to the Santobono hospital in Naples with serious fractures and injuries, consistent with abuse. In that case too, investigations are continuing to shed light on what happened.
Two different stories, but united by the common denominator of violence against minors, which rekindle the spotlight on the need for prevention, protection and attention towards the most vulnerable groups.
