First of the 4 projects of the Vanvitelli complex up for tender.
“The tender procedure is open for the assignment of the preparatory design services for the protection and safeguarding of the historic forest and the architectural structures of the Royal Estate of San Silvestro as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The amount of the works allocated by NextGenerationEU to the Oasis of the Vanvitellian Complex is 1 million and 700 thousand euros”.
This was announced in a note from the Royal Palace of Caserta which explains that “the intervention is included in Mission 1 – Digitalization, innovation, competitiveness and culture, Component 3 – Tourism and Culture 4.0, Measure 2 “Regeneration of small cultural sites, religious and rural cultural heritage”, Investment 2.3 “Programs to enhance the identity of places: historic parks and gardens” which has allocated twenty-five million euros to the Royal Palace of Caserta for the implementation of the project 'Restoration and enhancement interventions of the Royal Palace of Caserta Park complex'”.
The project includes four design components: recovery and enhancement of the Fizzo Springs and the Carolino Aqueduct; creation of a new irrigation system for the Royal Park and regeneration of the meadows; restoration, recovery and enhancement of the Waterway (monumental fountains, basins and ponds); protection and safeguard of the historic Woods and the architectural structures of the Royal Estate of San Silvestro. The area called “Bosco di San Silvestro”, already a Site of Community Importance, is now designated a Special Conservation Area of the Natura 2000 Network of the Campania Region. It extends for approximately 76 hectares behind the Royal Park, on the hills of Monte Maiuolo and Monte Briano. The Woods are located on the lands purchased by King Charles of Bourbon starting in 1750, subsequently reunited and delimited by a perimeter wall by order of Ferdinand IV.
The area was intended for agriculture and hunting and for this reason, between 1797 and 1801, the site was equipped with a Casino, built according to a design by the architect Francesco Collecini. The contract, defined with Invitalia, in collaboration with the Mission Unit for the implementation of the Pnrr and with Service VIII of the General Secretariat of the MiC, includes engineering and architecture services relating to the executive design, the service of drafting the Forest Management Plan and survey. The design has as its object the natural and historical-architectural heritage (in particular the perimeter wall of the Royal Estate of San Silvestro and the Casino Collecini with its appurtenances).
The work therefore intends to investigate the state of conservation of the habitat of the Wood; guarantee the use of the area; provide the area with a specific programmed management tool such as the Forest Management Plan; enhance the naturalistic-environmental and historical-architectural values of the site; enhance and strengthen the function of the public heritage. The Wood of San Silvestro is mainly composed of evergreens with a prevalence of holm oak.
The current vegetative state of the tree species is degraded mainly due to pathogens that have settled on plants already made vulnerable by climate change, as ascertained during the inspection carried out by the Phytosanitary Service of the Campania Region. In relation to the architectural component, the wall that delimits the Bosco di San Silvestro has problems of static instability and widespread manifestations of surface degradation.
The contract will be aimed at interventions in the collapsed sections, at risk of collapse or identified as critical with cleaning, clearing of brush and containment pruning of the wooded area; cleaning and weeding of invasive vegetation; reconstruction of the masonry preferably with the restoration of the individual tuff elements; repointing of joints; dismantling of the existing protection device of the damaged wall and its reconstruction.
The Casino Collecini, on the other hand, despite being in good condition, presents physiological degradation phenomena. The planned interventions are the maintenance and restoration of the existing historical fixtures; the replacement of the damaged fixtures with new fixtures with high thermal performance; the revision of the roof covering; the redevelopment of the external space belonging to the Casino Reale.
