If at the end of the long interrogation it was Alessandro Impagnatiello himself who confessed to the murder of his partner Julia Tramontano Seven months pregnant, it was a long series of mistakes made and the many contradictions that immediately led investigators to him.
Here are the most significant ones highlighted by the same arrest warrant. The first story Impagnatiello provides a shaky version of the facts from the very beginning, so much so that the prosecutor Alessia Menegazzo begins: “The accused's story, at first sight, did not appear credible, as it was characterised by numerous contradictions, and was later denied by subsequent investigations”.
The strong smell of gasoline Immediately after the missing person was reported, the police went to the victim and her partner's house “and on that occasion they noted that the car in use (in Impagnatello ed.) was giving off a strong smell of petrol coming from the trunk.
According to the suspect, this smell was due to the spillage of fuel contained in a bottle previously used to top up his moped and no longer present because it had been disposed of. Furthermore, even inside the house the officers found a persistent smell of petrol coming from the backpack”.
Latex gloves always in the backpack “blue latex gloves were found, which Impagnatiello said he had gotten to wash dishes by hand because the dishwasher was broken. The gloves had also been noticed a few hours earlier… by the lover… on the afternoon of May 28, sticking out of the backpack”.
Messages and phone callsand Impagnatiello's lover receives messages from Giulia Tramontano's cell phone who writes that she has not been “sincere – the woman says – and to leave her alone and that she wanted to go back home (I think she meant Naples). After that Giulia didn't answer any of my chat messages and I tried to contact her by phone but without receiving an answer as I was getting an answer from the answering machine”.
The woman then calls Alessandro who first tells her that Giulia is in bed sleeping, then, when asked to frame her with the phone's camera, he changes his version "claiming that Giulia is not at home because she was spending the night at a friend's house and that she was sleeping at that moment".
When the lover asked him how he knew she was sleeping since she wasn't at home, the answer was “who used to fall asleep early.” “The change of register used by Giulia in the messages is evident compared to the tone of the conversation she had shortly before (with her partner's lover, ed.) – writes the PM – and it is likely that the author of these messages is not Giulia but Impagnatiello, also by virtue of the fact that the text mentions Giulia's desire to return to her home, evidently with the aim of pre-establishing the justification for her departure”.
The cameras The video cameras near the victim's house show several movements, on the night of the disappearance, of the same Impagnatiello. "From the initial information and their comparison with the videos - explains the PM - strong contradictions have emerged between the reality of the facts and the story provided by the suspect in the complaint. The suspect has indeed changed his version several times about Giulia's presence at home on May 27, contradicting himself about the reason for his partner's absence from home".
Searches on the sites Impagnatiello is particularly active in that hour on search engines. He inquires among other things about “removing sweat stains”, “removing bleach stains”, “removing oil stains”, “removing rust stains”, “removing blood stains”, “removing grass stains” just as the investigators were making surveys on his car and also, “burned ceramic bathtub”, and in fact at first he had tried to set fire to the victim's body in the bathtub.
“Even subsequent research – the prosecutor writes – highlights the suspect’s constant attention to the matter, presumably in order to monitor the outcome of the investigations”. “From this we can deduce that the suspect, after killing his partner and the child she was carrying, then tried to eliminate the traces of the murder he had just committed. This element is combined with the images extracted from the surveillance footage, which show the suspect carrying a bag with a pile compatible with a pile of clothes”.
La cenere According to the testimony of a neighbor, on the afternoon of May 28, there was “a large quantity of ash coming from the entrance door of Impagnatiello's apartment, continuing up the stairs of the condominium to the garage of the same, such a quantity as to suggest a barbecue, although, as she reported that day she had not smelled any barbecue”. Impagnatiello in fact he had burned some blood-stained objects to cover up the traces.
