No evacuations for the moment, but the flow of day tourists will be limited. This is the decision taken by the Civil Protection operational committee, convened by the head of department Fabrizio Curcio, by the mayor of Lipari, Riccardo Gullo.
The measures adopted aim to keep people away from danger: climbing up the volcano is prohibited and citizens are invited to move away from the coast due to the risk of tsunamis.
The evacuation of the island has not yet been ordered: we are in a pre-alarm phase. Tourists who already have a reservation in a hotel or other facilities can stay, but we are trying to limit the influx of day visitors to avoid creating inconvenience in the event of an emergency.
At the moment there are approximately 2.500 people on the island residents and tourists, while in winter the resident population is less than a thousand.
The Coast Guard, with patrol boats, ships and aircraft, has been engaged since yesterday in Stromboli, under the coordination of the Civil Protection Department, to ensure the safety of residents and tourists.
