Camorra, Vomero boss Maurizio Brandi released after 15 years: welcomed with fireworks

After serving his sentence, the Vomero boss, he found his freedom again.

At 58 years old, after 15 years spent in prison, he returned to his home in the Arenella district, now subjected to the measure of of probation.

According to the magistrates of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, Brandi was a leading figure in organized crime that terrorized the hilly area for years. His release follows shortly after that of Maria Giovanna Caiazzo, daughter of the imprisoned boss Antonio Caiazzo.

Maurizio Brandi – as anticipated to the newspaper – he was detained in the Milan Opera prison, from which he was released around 10 in the morning. After a trip to Naples, he returned home. The last time he was spoken of was in 2013, when the Vomero Camorra suffered a severe blow.

The Court of Cassation rejected the appeals presented by the clan leaders, forcing them to serve the sentences imposed by the Court of Appeal: 16 years for Giovanni Alfano, 20 for Antonio Caiazzo and 18 for Maurizio Brandi. These three individuals, according to the prosecution, had managed the illicit activities of the hill area for years under a monopoly regime.

Compared to the first degree, on appeal Brandi's sentence was reduced by four years, thanks to a cumulation of sentences for Camorra and racketeering. It is important to underline that Brandi has served his entire sentence and has no more pending proceedings.

In 2011, Brandi and a member of the Polverino clan they were intercepted while organizing the payment of “mesate”, a monthly salary, to a prisoner and his family.

The conversations were coded: “Come and have a coffee with us” or “Come by before the holidays to take a look at the garden,” phrases that masked an appointment to deliver the money. The investigating judge deemed the behavior to constitute the crime of receiving stolen goods aggravated by the mafia context.

Upon his arrival, he was greeted with a ritual typical of important Camorra boss releases: two nights ago, dozens of fireworks were set off in his honor in the neighborhood.
