Sorrento Peninsula – Fear at sea off the coast of the Punta Campanella marine protected area, where a boat sank after a breakdown. The crew was rescued, while an investigation was opened to determine the causes of the accident. The Coast Guard intervened promptly after receiving a distress call in the stretch of water in front of the Municipality of Vico Equense, on the side of the Gulf of Salerno.
The vessel was taking on water and was on the verge of sinking. The rescue operation, initially coordinated by the Maritime District Office of Capri, was then passed to the Port Authority of Castellammare di Stabia, which managed the rescue of the crew and the monitoring of any spills into the sea.
When they arrived on site, the military found the vessel half-sunk, but fortunately the crew members had already managed to transfer to another vessel of the same company. After careful inspections, no signs of pollution were found in the Punta Campanella marine protected area.
According to initial reconstructions, the accident occurred following a failure recorded shortly after leaving the port of Positano, which caused water to enter the engine room. The captain of the vessel, realizing the gravity of the situation, decided to approach the coast to avoid sinking in deep waters, which would have made the recovery of the wreck more complicated.
The Port Authority of Castellammare, led by Commander Andrea Pellegrino and supported by the Vico Equense Beach Delegation, is now coordinating the recovery and disposal operations of the wreck, in accordance with current regulations. The administrative investigation opened by the authorities aims to clarify precisely the causes of the failure that led to the sinking.
