Empoli's sporting director, Roberto Gemmi, expressed his doubts about the decisive episode of the 1-0 defeat against NapoliSpeaking to DAZN microphones at the end of the match, Gemmi criticized the referee's decision that led to the penalty converted by Kvaratskhelia, underlining the lack of obvious contact between the players involved.
“I don't want to create too much controversy, but on the episode of the penalty awarded to Napoli I don't see any contact between Anjorin and Politano”, said the manager. Despite the disappointment of the defeat, Gemmi said he was satisfied with the team's performance: “We are happy with our performance, especially considering the comparison with a reality much more structured than ours. We were always in the game”.
However, the sporting director reiterated his difficulties in accepting the referee's decision: "I have a hard time understanding that penalty, also because I don't see any contact in that circumstance. This episode falls within those 'little penalties' that the AIA had said it no longer wanted to award."
