The exhibition Ribera's realism in the faces of the prophets seen by Éric Fonteneau will be inaugurated on November 21, 2024 at the State Archives of Naples in the Sala di Casa Reale. Curated by Candida Carrino and José Vicente Quirante Rives, the exhibition will be open until February 15, 2025 with free admission.
The initiative is organized by Colonnese Editore, part of the Mazzei Publishing Group, which took care of the installations and the publication of the catalogue.
The Voyage of Fonteneau and Quirante Rives
The exhibition draws inspiration from the trip to Naples by Éric Fonteneau and José Vicente Quirante Rives in March 2022, when they visited the church of Certosa di San Martino. This trip led to the publication of Quirante’s volume “Dodici araldi wrinkzosi” and the production of Fonteneau’s drawings, exhibited for the first time. Both works represent a dialogue between Italian, Spanish and French cultures, reflecting on Ribera’s artistic contribution.
Ribera and His Naturalism
In the seventeenth century, the painter Jusepe de Ribera used Neapolitan models to represent various prophets commissioned by the prior of the Certosa di San Martino. Fonteneau, through drawing, reinterprets these subjects, highlighting how their prosaic aspect was sublimated by their placement in the iconographic context of the church. Ribera's prophets, placed under Giovanni Lanfranco's apostles, offer an example of naturalism transformed into sacred art.
