The participation of the magistrates of the District of the Court of Appeal of Naples in the strike against the reform of justice and the separation of careers is over 75%.
The data was provided by Cristina Curatoli, president of the Executive Committee of the ANM of Naples, who organized a public meeting this morning in the Tartaglione library of the Palace of Justice of Naples “with the aim of explaining the reasons for the judiciary's dissent regarding the constitutional reform currently underway on the separation of careers”.
Toga on their shoulders, tricolor cockade on their chest and a leaflet of the Italian Constitution in their hand. In Naples, magistrates responded to the strike, on a national basis, called by the National Association of Magistrates against the reform project of the separation of careers, the splitting of the CSM with the introduction of the drawing of lots as an elective method, and the institution of the High Disciplinary Court.
The day of protest opened with the assembly held in the Tartaglione Library of the Palace of Justice. Among those who spoke were the writer Maurizio De Giovanni and the director Andrea Segre.
Many retired magistrates also registered their presence, such as the former minister Luigi Scotti, the former attorney general Luigi Riello, the former head of the Nola prosecutor's office Paolo Mancuso, the former president of the Court of Naples Ettore Ferrara. Also present at the meeting were the prosecutor of the Republic of Naples Nicola Gratteri and the attorney general Aldo Policastro.
Absent, however, were the president of the Court Elisabetta Garzo and the president of the Court of Appeal of Naples Maria Rosaria Covelli. At the end of the meeting, the magistrates took turns in a relay on some articles of the Constitution. The reading of article 104 on the autonomy and independence of the judiciary was followed by a long round of applause.
Afterwards, the magistrates crossed the Courthouse and reached the main entrance where they remained for several minutes in protest showing the Constitution. Then some magistrates were busy with a leaflet distribution at the Directional Center: they distributed the information booklet containing the points of the reform and the reasons for their protest.
“We have decided to strike, adhering to what is the strongest form of protest, because – it was one of the passages of Cristina Curatoli's speech – we believe that the moment is extremely delicate and that fundamental principles are at stake such as those of the autonomy and independence of the judiciary, which are not privileges of magistrates but are rights of all citizens. The priorities of justice are many, certainly it is not a priority to undermine the independence of the judiciary”.
