Santa Maria Capua Vetere – A prison police inspector, on duty at the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison, was arrested while trying to introduce 19 cell phones, 20 power cables and approximately 35 grams of cocaine, intended for the inmates, into the institution.
The man, 52, was arrested over the weekend by his own colleagues shortly after starting work. The arrest was validated yesterday by the investigating judge of the Court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere.
The inspector is accused of possession of narcotics for the purpose of dealing, the illegal introduction of electronic devices into prison and corruption. According to investigators, he allegedly received promises of money in exchange for the introduction of the illicit goods by some inmates.
The USPP (Union of Penitentiary Police Unions) immediately took a stand, praising the operation conducted by the institute's command: "Credit must be given to the staff for their brilliant work - declared Giuseppe Moretti and Ciro Auricchio, national president and regional secretary of the USPP - Episodes of this kind must be nipped in the bud. Those who commit these crimes are not worthy of wearing the uniform".
"The safety of penitentiary institutions - the union representatives add - is an absolute priority. Those who betray the trust of the State and colleagues put the entire system at risk. The penitentiary police believe in democratic and institutional values, and cannot tolerate such behavior".
The investigation continues to ascertain any complicity and to reconstruct precisely the corruption within the institute.
