Article Key Points
During the night between Sunday and Monday, the firefighters were once again called to intervene in via Ferraris in Scafati to put out the resumption of the fire that devastated the Seneca srl waste storage plant.
Strong winds fueled the flames, requiring the intervention of fifty firefighters from Naples, Salerno and Avellino.
Environmental Investigations and Monitoring
While the firefighters worked to put out the fire, the Nocera Inferiore Public Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation to ascertain the causes of the stake and any responsibilities in the management of the site. The investigations aim to shed light on the alleged irregularities found, including the lack of a fire prevention system.
In the meantime, Arpac has released the first results of the environmental monitoring, carried out on 5 and 6 April, to detect the presence of dioxins, furans and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls in the air.
The data showed concentrations lower than the reference values used by the scientific community. Even the analyses by the Arpac mobile laboratory, carried out between Sunday afternoon and 10 a.m. on Monday, did not detect any exceedances of the legal limits for the pollutants monitored, including fine dust, nitrogen oxides and benzene.
Continuous monitoring and high attention
Arpac has specified that monitoring is still ongoing and will continue in the coming days, with further sampling and analysis of other pollutants. Attention remains high, not only in Scafati but throughout the Agro Nocerino Sarnese, to monitor the situation and guarantee the safety of citizens.
Citizens' concern
The Association “Per la Nostra Terra” and the Cappelle e Oltre committee, active since 2015 on the environmental protection front, intervened on the two fires in the waste depot on the outskirts of Scafati.
In a note they "express deep concern" for the new fire that broke out during the night between 3 and 4 inside the waste disposal plant S.EN.EC.A., located in via G. Ferraris.
And then they explain: "Only a few days ago, on Saturday, the same plant was affected by another serious fire that is still being extinguished. It is a site already known for environmental problems related to the previous Elios management, which in the past had caused numerous inconveniences to the resident population, with smelly emissions and leakage of leachate onto the road.
“For years we have been denouncing the inadequacy of controls, the questionable management of waste treatment plants and the absolute lack of transparency. The health of citizens is systematically put on the back burner”.
“Already promoters of the activation of Sub 1 in the Campania Region for the recognition of the environmental criticalities linked to the Sarno river, the association and the committee reiterate the need to:
immediate investigations and public on the causes of the fires,
continuous monitoring As of today, we do not yet have the Arpac data on air quality,
greater involvement of citizenship in environmental choices,
an urgent review of the authorisations issued to waste treatment plants.
"We will not remain silent. It is our duty to monitor, inform and act in defense of our territory and future generations."

I feel that this fire is very worrying, especially for the health of the citizens. It is important that the authorities act quickly and that there is constant monitoring to avoid other similar events in the future.
