Ischia– A glimmer of hope for the Buono family: Judge Antonia Schiattarella of the island section of the Court of Naples has accepted their lawyer's request, suspending the demolition order for their home until March 20.
The house had become a symbol of the islanders' protests against the demolitions, which culminated in a demonstration last Saturday.
Previously, Schiattarella had rejected an initial request to suspend the demolition, setting a hearing for March 20 and instructing the Guardia di Finanza of Ischia to verify the Buono family's financial situation.
The family has always maintained that they built without permits out of necessity, not speculation, and that they did not have the resources to find another place to live in the event of demolition.
A final decision in favor of the Buonos could constitute an important legal precedent in the numerous proceedings for building abuses.
