Naples – After the 4.6 magnitude tremors on March 13 and 3.9 on March 15, the Campi Flegrei recorded a deceleration in ground uplift.
Article Key Points
This is revealed in the latest weekly bulletin of theVesuvius Observatory (INGV), relating to the period 17-23 March, which constantly monitors the evolution of the volcanic area.
The peak and the braking
In recent months, especially after the seismic swarm of 15-19 February, the lifting speed had reached 3 cm per month in the zone of maximum deformation, corresponding to the Rione Terra of Pozzuoli. Between February 15 and 16, the most sensitive stations had even measured a 1cm lift in just 24 hours.
However, following the March earthquakes, the phenomenon has undergone a slowdown, although the final data can only be confirmed in the coming weeks, with the processing of further surveys. Meanwhile, from the beginning of 2024, the cumulative lift in the same area exceeds the 24 cm.
Recent seismic activity
During the monitored week, the seismographs recorded 42 events, all of modest size, with a Maximum magnitude of 1.7. Despite the persistent activity, the Vesuvius Observatory reassures: “There are no elements that suggest critical developments in the short term”.
The situation remains under close observation, as experts continue to study the supervolcano's signals. Phlegraean, one of the most monitored in the world.

The article explains well the situation of Campi Flegrei, but I do not understand why there is a slowdown in the uplift. I am worried but I hope that the experts can manage the situation without problems.
