At a territorial level, the most dangerous regions are concentrated in the Center and in the South: Basilicata and Umbria they remained in red zone for four consecutive years, followed by Campania and Aosta Valley (three years). On the contrary, the Toscana stands out as the most virtuous region, with two years in white area, an indicator of a mortality rate lower than the national average.
A risk that does not diminish
THEmortality incidence among workers remains high and almost unchanged over time. "The balance is tragic, as much as a war bulletin. Work in Italy seems to be a battlefield without trenches or shields“, he reports Mauro Rossato, president ofSafety and Environment Observatory Vega of Mestre.
The data analysis highlights how the phenomenon has remained constant over the years. In 2021, a year marked by the pandemic, there were 973 dead, with an annual incidence of 43,1 fatal accidents per million employed. In the following three years, the value dropped slightly, settling at 34,2 in 2022, 33,9 in 2023 e 34,1 in 2024, but with no signs of real structural change.
Who are the workers most at risk?
Those who pay the highest price are the workers over 65, with an incidence that varies between 96,1 deaths per million employed (2022) and 150,4 (2021). The band too 55 64-years records alarming values (between 54,5 and 82,2).
Another worrying fact concerns the foreign workers, whose mortality rate is more than double compared to Italians: from 63,2 to 74,2 deaths per million employed, against i 29,7-40,8 Italians.
In the four-year period 418 women have lost their lives at work. However, the risk remains significantly higher for men, with an incidence that oscillates between 54,7 and 67,6 deaths per million employed, against i 5,2-9,6 of women.
Workplace safety: an emergency that must be addressed immediately
The Vega Observatory analysis highlights a structural problem, aggravated by factors such as the poor prevention, lack of controls , persistence of undeclared work, difficult to monitor.
While it is true that the absolute numbers show a slight decline compared to the most critical years of the pandemic, the mortality rate remains steadily high, a sign that prevention measures are still not sufficient to guarantee the safety of Italian workers.
