Avellino– A new episode of violence shakes the Avellino District Prison. A 27-year-old inmate was rushed to the “Moscati” hospital after being the victim of a violent attack that occurred yesterday afternoon inside the penitentiary.
The man arrived in red code at the emergency room, where doctors diagnosed him with a serious head trauma. His condition is defined as critical.
According to an initial reconstruction, still being examined by the competent authorities, the young man was involved in a fight with other inmates, which quickly degenerated into a ferocious beating. It is not yet clear whether it was a targeted attack or a fight that broke out over trivial reasons.
What is certain is that the impact of the blows received was such as to require immediate transfer to hospital, where he is still under close observation.
The investigation has been entrusted to the Commander of the Penitentiary Police, who is collecting testimonies and viewing images from surveillance cameras to reconstruct the exact dynamics of what happened and identify those responsible.
The episode is part of a context already marked by numerous critical issues, with episodes of tension between the detainees and staffing shortages that make it difficult to ensure safety within the facility.
«Yet another serious event that demonstrates, once again, the urgent need for structural and organizational interventions within Italian prisons», commented union sources from the penitentiary police, asking for greater protection for staff and safer conditions for the management of prisoners.
In the meantime, we await developments from the internal investigation to ascertain any responsibilities and adopt the necessary measures.
