Moments of tension this morning in the province of Avellino, where about twenty young people were stuck on board the funicular that connects Mercogliano to the evocative Marian sanctuary of Montevergine.
The system, operated by Air Campania, suddenly stopped in mid-air due to the automatic activation of the safety system, leaving passengers suspended for a few minutes that seemed interminable.
The incident occurred in the late morning, when the cabin, full of children heading to the sanctuary, stopped abruptly. The alarm was raised immediately, but the Air Campania staff intervened promptly, managing to bring all the passengers back down to the valley in a few minutes, unharmed and in complete safety.
A quick and well-coordinated operation that avoided more serious consequences, transforming the episode into a simple scare.
According to an official note from Air Campania, the activation of the security system took place as part of an increase in control levels, ordered in recent days as part of the usual monitoring activities of the facility.
“Passenger safety is our top priority,” the company stressed, explaining that the service was immediately suspended to allow for the necessary technical checks, as required by protocols.
The accident, although without consequences, inevitably generated apprehension among passengers and the local community, but also highlighted the effectiveness of safety measures and the preparation of the staff.
Technical checks are underway to ascertain the exact causes of the blockage, while the funicular will remain stopped until the checks are completed. In the meantime, the boys involved, after the moment of fear, were able to breathe a sigh of relief, returning home without further inconvenience.
