THE BOOK
The last moments of quiet, the last flash of lightheartedness: it is the beginning of the late summer lunch that Marina Pietrofesa Cortese, eighty-year-old matriarch, has prepared for her family, on one of the elegant beaches of the Ionian coast of Lucania. Of course it is strange that Wlady, Marina's favorite nephew, has not arrived, but his absence is only a ripple in the golden atmosphere that envelops that family of ancient landowners. Viola Guarino's day is very different, called to analyze a crime scene that seems like a theatrical backdrop: Professor Vittorio Ambroselli killed like Marat in the bathtub of his house full of works of art. Someone like Ambroselli, reflect the investigators, including the charming deputy prosecutor Loris Ferrara, could have many enemies: he was the physicist of the Irreversible Pit where, a few kilometers from there, in the 1950s, American nuclear waste had been hidden. And when the relationship between her seventeen-year-old daughter Ginevra and the young Wlady comes to light – whose absence begins to take on the appearance of a disappearance – the two cases appear unmistakably linked. Is the solution found only in the present or in a past that, like nuclear waste, is buried in the depths of guilt? The last summer of innocence: an event, an experience, a topos that for the protagonists of this story returns and repeats itself like a curse. Piera Carlomagno weaves in this new noir a masterful plot of shadows in which this time even the indomitable Viola Guarino, a pathologist and a bit of a witch, will struggle not to get entangled.
