The mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, declared that the marine reclamation in the Bagnoli Sin will be the largest ever carried out in Europe.
During the City Council, Manfredi he illustrated the ongoing activities and explained that a definitive project has been started to clarify how to carry out the remediation, what standards to achieve and the related cost. This project, never carried out before, is currently being evaluated as it is very complex.
"The cleanup at sea is necessary due to the pollution from hydrocarbons and heavy metals present on the seabed“. Manfredi stressed that the water is not polluted, but it is the seabed that needs to be cleaned up.
"The project includes the removal of the landfill, a very complicated operation, and a reclamation of both the beach and the seabed, with the removal of the surface layers. In addition, a sunken reef will be built to block the exchange of marine sediments and ensure permanent remediation. The total cost of the intervention is around 650 million euros. "
Manfredi also mentioned that alternative technologies to traditional remediation are being evaluated, such as chemical decomposition and sea electrodes, but these solutions are not yet certified and acceptable to national control bodies.
"Si is therefore evaluating the possibility of using less invasive marine cleanup techniques. In addition to the cost, the mayor also highlighted the environmental impact of removing the polluted material, which would require the transport of millions of cubic meters of waste by road".
Therefore, a cost-benefit analysis of different intervention techniques is being carried out to assess both the short- and long-term impact.
