The relationship between cinema and dialect will be the focus of the fourth meeting of the “Dialect meetings” organized by the Campania dei Festival Foundation and curated by the Committee for the protection and enhancement of the Neapolitan linguistic heritage.
The event will take place next Monday, February 26th at 16pm at the MUSAP-Fondazione Circolo Artistico Politecnico ETS in Napoli and will see the participation of professors Fabio Rossi and Carolina Stromboli. During the meeting, the links between Italian and dialect on the big screen and the use of Neapolitan in cinema will be analyzed.
We will start from the first dialect representations of the “white telephones” to arrive at the new linguistic expression of contemporary works such as “Gomorra” by Matteo Garrone, capable of representing the dialect varieties and the different social marginalizations without filters.
Participants will explore the long journey through Italian cinema, passing through directors such as Mario Martone, Antonio Capuano, Pappi Corsicato and Stefano Incerti, who have contributed to spreading an image of Naples far from stereotypes, but also relevant on a linguistic level. The meeting will provide an overview of how Italian cinema has represented and influenced the use of dialects, anticipating the times and challenging stereotypes. The speakers at the meeting are Fabio Rossi, author of works such as “Italian Language and Cinema” (Carrocci, 2023), “Cinematic Language” (Aracne, 2006) and “Language in Play” (Bulzoni, 2002), and Carolina Stromboli, curator of the critical edition of “Lo cunto de li cunti” by Giovan Battista Basile (Salerno editrice, 2013) and author of the book “Dialect on the Big Screen. Neapolitan in the History of Italian Cinema”, as well as co-author of the volume “Massimo Troisi, a Modern Neapolitan” (Cesati, 2021).
