Naples. During the night, a lone thief on an Ape motorbike stole all the iron grates from the manholes in Via San Gregorio Armeno, the street of the shepherds.
An unprecedented criminal action, carried out with almost surgical precision. The images from the surveillance cameras, although fragmentary, show a furtive shadow moving in the darkness.
It is suspected that behind this raid there is an organized gang, ready to do anything to profit from the precious metal.
Cast iron, now a valuable commodity on the black market, is becoming a real magnet for criminals. Its value, constantly increasing, fuels a flourishing illegal trade that puts the safety of our streets and our neighborhoods at risk.
But the consequences of this act of vandalism go far beyond simple economic damage. Via San Gregorio Armeno, the beating heart of Neapolitan tradition and a world-famous tourist destination, today appears disfigured and dangerous.
Holes left by open manholes pose a real threat to passers-by, especially at night.
The thief captured by video surveillance cameras
The artisans noticed it when they opened their shops, which were very crowded during the Christmas period but were also a destination for many visitors, both Italian and foreign, even in the summer. It was necessary to cordon off the holes that opened up after the theft to avoid danger to passers-by.
The theft was also captured on video surveillance footage in the area. A lone thief on an Ape motorbike was in action. The theft occurred shortly before 3 am.
A similar theft had been committed just four days ago in vico San Nicola alla Dogana, near the port.It is not clear whether these are different people.
