“After the paper signature collection which saw hundreds of people including citizens and associations sign the petition launched to keep faith with the resolution of the municipality of Naples n. 246/2023 of 27 July 2023, which aims to protect San Gregorio Armeno as a street of nativity scenes and shepherds, we have also decided to launch an online petition – declares Vincenzo Capuano, president of the Botteghe di San Gregorio Armeno -.
The initiative was born precisely because there were so many Neapolitans and tourists both inside and outside Naples, who asked us to sign but, not being able to due to distances, we want to please them to also feel their closeness.
After the opening of the well-known Scaturchio pastry shop in the centre of the street, we also know of other food businesses that want to open in the small Via dei Pastori, the last remaining bastion of Neapolitan nativity scene art – continues Capuano -.
The uniqueness of this street lies not only in the craftsmanship produced there, but also in the exclusive presence of historic shops that follow one another along the street without interruption of other types of activity, making it a magical place where you can breathe art and tradition, making the visitor feel out of time.
San Gregorio Armeno is, in fact, a place of the soul where the profound culture of the City of Naples finds its definition in the nativity scene art of the 700th century. Neapolitan. We can no longer allow Naples to lose this other street of Neapolitan culture and excellence, such as Via San Sebastiano,
Port'Alba and other historic streets of Naples to make room for food and other goods. For this reason we invite people to sign from any part of Italy and the world, also because if San Gregorio Armeno closes, even the businesses that will open precisely because of the particularity of the via dei pastori, will close, it's just a matter of time".
