Today on the island ofIschia a double meeting was held with the prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, to take stock of the legality and security in the works di reconstruction post-disaster and discuss the traffic of heavy vehicles, which is now unsustainable.
In the first meeting, at the headquarters of the Reconstruction Commissioner in Ischia Porto, Bari verified the application of the protocol signed months ago for the reconstruction sites.
Previous checks had revealed the presence of companies linked to criminal organizations. The prefect announced the issuing of 14 anti-mafia interdictions for entrepreneurs involved in reconstruction work financed on the island and the introduction of the badge and the "weekly construction site report" for workers, important tools for monitoring attendance and preventing criminal infiltration.
On the sidelines of the meeting, attended by the mayors of the island, the reconstruction commissioner Legnini, the police commissioner of Naples Agricola, the provincial commander of the Guardia di Finanza Paolo Borrelli, and the trade unions and professional organizations, the prefect declared:
“I wanted to clarify to the mayors and the commissioner structure that even private reconstruction must strictly respect the protocol of Casamicciola, which includes incisive clauses: even companies that work for private construction sites must be registered on the white list, without cascading subcontracts".
Di Bari recalled that he had ordered two inspection visits to the construction sites, which resulted in the bans, and anticipated that the control activity will also be extended to further technical aspects.
“This first meeting of the monitoring table, convened at my request, is taking place at a crucial time for post-landslide and post-earthquake reconstruction,” declared Commissioner Legnini.
“In the coming months there will be a strong growth in the number of construction sites and it is necessary to intensify surveillance and control activities. After the two tragedies that have hit this territory hard, the island cannot afford the shame of pollution of construction sites by criminal enterprises”.
In the afternoon, the prefect held another meeting at the council chamber of the municipality of Casamicciola, where the mayor asked for a redistribution of the traffic of heavy vehicles that pass daily through the port of the spa town.
The meeting was also attended by shipping companies, the maritime authority and the Campania region. The need for coordination between the six municipalities of the island, responsible for road traffic ordinances, emerged.
“We need a protocol between the mayors to find temporary solutions to the problem, and a sacrifice from each municipality to reach a solution that encompasses all the needs, including those of Pozzuoli from where most of the vehicles for Ischia depart,” declared the prefect.
Giosi Ferrandino, mayor of Casamicciola, added: "On the island there is a real problem of traffic that affects all the municipalities. Heavy vehicles represent a critical issue for safety and livability.
In Capri, the problem has been addressed by limiting traffic during the night; here it would be enough to respect the existing ordinances. In recent years, however, the size of trucks has increased, compromising the tourist appeal of Ischia. We will have to find a solution with the help of the prefect, which safeguards both the islanders and the tourists”.
