The Coppa Italia match between Napoli and Palermo, played yesterday evening at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, was marked by episodes of violence and disorder. The throwing of large firecrackers, which occurred especially during the interval, led to moments of tension and discomfort for the audience present.
Il prefect of Naples, Michele of Bari, defined these acts as "unspeakable episodes", underlining however that prevention and the coordinated plan for controlling the territory are proving effective. During the evening, as part of the public order services arranged by the Naples Police Headquarters, three Palermo fans were stopped at the entrance to the stadium.
During the checks carried out by the personnel of the Digos, the San Paolo Police Station and the Guardia di Finanza, the three were found in possession of pyrotechnic material. Immediately taken to the Police Headquarters, a procedure was started to evaluate their position and any sanctions to be applied.
The second half of the match started five minutes late due to firecrackers being thrown between the fans of both teams. The referee Collu temporarily suspended the match for safety reasons and to allow the pitch to clear of smoke, asking several times through the stadium speaker Maradona to discontinue the use of pyrotechnic material.
Only after safety conditions were restored could the match resume regularly.
