Poetry is often seen as a means of personal and artistic expression, but for many it is also a powerful act of resistance against oppression and indifference. This is the central theme of Roberto Bolaño's lecture-performance "The Wild Poets," which will be performed at the Sala Assoli from October 14 to 16.
Created by Igor Esposito, with the artistic contribution of Daniele Russo and music by Massimo Cordovani, the show intends to celebrate the strength and courage of a generation of poets who dared to challenge injustice and dictatorships.
The poetic journey in Bolaño's chapters
The conference is divided into three chapters, each of which represents a crucial piece of Roberto Bolaño's life and work. The first chapter introduces the audience to the context of Augusto Pinochet's coup d'état, an event that profoundly affected Bolaño's young life.
This period is characterized by his encounter with poets such as Carlos Pezoa Veliz and Jorge Telleir, whose verses helped shape Bolaño's artistic vision and poetry as a form of resistance.
The artistic refuge in Barcelona
The second chapter transports viewers to Barcelona, where Bolaño takes refuge in search of new creative inspiration. Here, together with his friend, the poet Bruno Montané, he continues to explore the world of poetry, finding solace and challenge in the works of Enrique Lihn and the tormented creations of Rodrigo Lira.
This period represents a phase of introspection and confrontation with one's personal demons, which are reflected in poetry.
The echo of Latin American dictatorships
The third and final chapter addresses the theme of Latin American dictatorships. In this context, the powerful verses of Raúl Zurita, condemning the horror of the disappeared, and the poetry of Claudio Bertoni, which with its ironic and colloquial tone offers a critical perspective on a reality pervaded by suffering and resistance, emerge.
These poets become symbols of a struggle that transcends time and space, bringing to light the importance of poetry as a vehicle of denunciation and hope.
The celebration of a collective struggle
"Roberto Bolaño teaches us that a poet can endure everything, but is never alone in his struggle," explains Igor Esposito. The show "The Wild Poets" is a celebration of poetry and human resilience, an evocative journey that aims to fill empty spaces with the words of those who fight for a better world. It is a tribute to those voices that, despite the passage of time, continue to resonate powerfully and represent a beacon of resistance, love, and freedom.
