Salerno. The judicial investigation will establish any responsibilities for the collapse of the tree on the university campus of Fisciano that injured five students, one of whom is in very serious condition. The Nocera Inferiore Prosecutor's Office is investigating the matter.
Carmine Fiorillo, 25 years old from Eboli, is hospitalized in intensive care at the San Giovanni di Dio and Ruggi d'Aragona hospital in Salerno. After the long and delicate neurosurgical intervention to try to reduce the hematoma on his head, a new medical bulletin is expected this morning. The 25-year-old has reported fractures in various parts of his body and the doctors have not yet released a prognosis.
He will have it for about forty days, instead, Carmine Pacific, 20 years old from Altavilla Silentina, who suffered multiple crushing trauma to the neck, spine and face. Multiple fractures, including vertebral ones, for the other 25 year old, Antonio La Regina, who is also in very delicate clinical conditions but his life is not at risk.
“Shocked and saddened by what happened”. Thus,University of Salerno “in all its components, teachers, students and technical and administrative staff, gathers in this dramatic moment around the three students of the specialization for support activities and their families”, after they were injured when a tree fell due to strong winds.
The University explains in a note that “the contract in place between the University Foundation – which manages the maintenance of the University’s greenery – and the company entrusted with the service, provides for the constant monitoring of the safety conditions of the over 3.000 trees present on the campuses, with the obligation to report critical issues and make them safe immediately, in addition to carrying out periodic and specific checks, with the release of documentation proving the relative results”.
Furthermore, “would like to point out that the Foundation has in any case activated a further and immediate extraordinary check, still in progress, at the Campuses of Fisciano and Baronissi. In relation to some news that appeared in the local press, furthermore, it should be noted that no weather warnings had been reported by the competent Bodies, including the national criticality bulletin”, concludes the note.

It is a very sad event that has affected the University of Salerno. I hope that the injured can recover soon and that the authorities will clarify what happened. It is important to understand if there are responsibilities.
