A 23-year-old man was surprised and arrested by the police of the Flying Squad of the General Prevention Office of the Avellino Police Headquarters. The man, a non-EU citizen regularly resident in the province of Avellino, was found hidden inside a plastic cabinet in the pastry shop of a tobacconist's located in the city center, during an attempted theft.
The intervention took place on the night of December 11, after a report of a theft in progress. The officers, arriving on the scene, found that the iron entrance door of the premises had been forced open. Inside the bar, on the floor behind the counter, there were numerous packets of cigarettes, scratch cards and several plastic bags already filled with hundreds of packets of cigarettes, ready to be taken away.
During the search, the officers found the young man hiding in the closet. At the sight of the police, the man turned himself in spontaneously. The subsequent personal search allowed them to find, hidden in his jacket and pants pockets, dozens of packs of cigarettes and a pair of large steel scissors, of the shears type, presumably used in the theft.
The man was arrested in flagrante delicto on charges of attempted aggravated theft, damage and illegal possession of burglary tools. The objects found were seized and the Public Prosecutor on duty at the Avellino Public Prosecutor's Office was immediately informed.
The young man will appear tomorrow for the summary trial. It should be noted that the charges brought are currently provisional and the guilt of the arrested person will be established only following a definitive judgment.
