Airline fares continue to rise, and those who intend to travel during the Christmas holidays are facing exorbitant costs. According to Assoutenti, on several routes the threshold of 600 euros per person has already been exceeded. For example, buying an economy class ticket today to fly to Italy between December 21 and January 6, with no time restrictions, costs 623 euros for a return flight from Genoa to Catania.
Article Key Points
The most expensive flights are often to Sicilian destinations: on the same days, at least 445 euros are spent to fly from Trieste to Catania, 412 euros from Florence to Catania, and 402 euros from Bologna to Palermo. Departing from Milan, the minimum cost is 421 euros for Crotone, 395 euros for Catania (but with peaks of up to 889 euros), 363 euros for Rome and 330 euros for Palermo.
To reach Sardinia, prices are generally more reasonable. During the Christmas period, a ticket to Cagliari costs at least 251 euros from Turin, 228 euros from Venice, 215 euros from Pisa and 147 euros from Milan. However, in some cases prices can reach impressive figures, such as 1.228 euros for selected flights.
These costs do not include any extras, such as carry-on luggage or seat selection, which further increase the costs.
The alarm of Assoutenti
“Traveling in Italy during the holidays is a bloodbath that empties the pockets of citizens,” says the president of Assoutenti, Gabriele Melluso. “Despite repeated complaints from consumers and proclamations from politicians, the high cost of flights reappears every year as an unsolvable problem.”
And thank goodness Santa Claus flies in his sleigh.
