The tragedy that struck Captain Fabio Antonio Altruda, who died at the age of 33 in a dramatic plane crash while he was flying over Sicily, struck the heart of Caserta, the Acquaviva neighborhood, where his family still lives.
Captain Altruda entered the Air Force with the regular Ibis 5° Course at the Air Force Academy in Pozzuoli in 2007. A combat ready pilot on Eurofighter aircraft, in service with the 37th Wing of Trapani since March 2021, he had hundreds of flight hours under his belt, many of which were also carried out in operations outside national borders in NATO air policing activities.
His career stopped on Tuesday in Trapani, while he was returning to base. The open investigation will have to shed light on the reasons for the tragedy.
“The entire Air Force, starting with the Chief of Staff General SA Luca Goretti, expresses condolences and closeness to the family, friends and colleagues of the 18th Flight Group of which Captain Fabio Antonio Altruda was a part,” reads a note.
“The Air Force, also in honor of Fabio, continues to carry out its tasks of defending national and NATO airspace.”
Grief was also expressed by the Caserta parliamentarians. At the Chamber of Deputies there was also a minute of silence to remember Captain Altruda.
