The 5th edition of “Meetings of value”, literary review of the city of Pompeii based on the winning idea of the manager Nicholas Ruocco, continues to gather confirmation from the public – always present and numerous at the events – for the high level of dissemination as well as for the calibre of the guests, coming from the varied world of culture.
This esteemed success was in fact renewed last Friday 1st December. In the traditional splendid location of theHabita79 Hotel, the meeting with the took place “queen of bags” di Sky Tg24, the brilliant and astute journalist, the one who spreads the difficult concepts of economics with the gift of simple language, the one that reaches everyone.
In a room packed with students and adults representing local institutions, professionals, but also reading enthusiasts, the journalist arrived out of breath - and clearly embarrassed - due to the innocent delay of an hour, suffered as a result of the inconvenience resulting from the day of protest, proclaimed by the transport sector on the same date.
However, this circumstance did not affect his usual, engaging smile and his accredited presentation skills, which attracted the maximum attention of the audience present, positively decreeing the outcome of the well-established event.
Subject of the meeting, “Domino effect”, the essay on globalization and climate, the latest literary work of the illustrious guest, published by Chiarelettere. Mariangela Pira, at the urging of the enlightened speaker – the Patron Nicola Ruocco – reported that this book was born out of a real need, that of writing about economics as for the previous ones, but with the aspiration of making this text clear to everyone. Its intent is clear: to transfer knowledge and passion for non-simple topics.
To give concreteness to this project – on the advice of his Oxford professor – she used anthropological studies that she has never stopped following and that, within the volume, allowed her to explain the reason for the variation in the cost of products over time. In particular, how the fight between China and the United States has an impact on cell phones, or the reason that determines the increase in the cost of wheat following the conflict that involved Ukraine.
Domino effect, the title of the book, as illustrated by Pira, indicates precisely that phenomenon by which what happens in Sri Lanka, just like the tiles of the well-known game of skill, arrives on our tables with a very simple process, which can be explained, for example, by the drought that determines a decrease in the coffee harvest, and a consequent increase in its cost, due to the strong demand for the product.
The discussion then extended to interesting topics of finance and geopolitics. The talk benefited from the valuable intervention of the President of the Banca di Credito Popolare di Torre del Greco, Dr. Mauro Ascione, interlocutor of Pira in the confrontation with her on the issue of inflation, the cost of money and the increase in interest rates.
"We are forced to raise rates as banks because money costs more, this is passed on to businesses and families and creates a bit of discomfort and a deregulation of credit at times. [...] We had this surge because of the cost of energy, of raw materials that were always skyrocketing. We have signals that the current rate must remain stable, now it cannot grow more, indeed it will suffer a slight decline in the 2024 semester".
At the end of the meeting Nicola Ruocco then gave the floor to the students of the Plinio Seniore classical high school of Castellammare di Stabia, present in the room, who with acumen and ease, asked the journalist questions on the controversial climate problem and globalization.
“Effetto domino” can therefore be defined as a versatile book, suitable for economics enthusiasts, but also for those who wish to delve deeper into these difficult to learn topics, through the simple and passionate explanation of the lively and competent Mariangela Pira, who on Friday worthily celebrated the value of “Gli incontri di valore”.
