In the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, an area of about one thousand square meters has been placed under seizure due to the presence of an illegal landfill, threatening the nesting of protected bird species. The military of the Pisciotta park carabinieri unit, in collaboration with the Cilento National Park Carabinieri Department, have carried out the preventive seizure of an area located near the Marinella locality, in the Palinuro di Centola hamlet (Salerno).
The area in question, a former open-air quarry abandoned since the 90s and located on the right bank of the Lambro River, is classified as a general oriented reserve "b1" of the national park. This area, recognized as an integral conservation area of the Cilento Coastal Park and an archaeological park for urban planning purposes, has been the subject of investigations coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Vallo della Lucania, under the supervision of the deputy prosecutor Luigi Spedaliere.
The investigations revealed the illegal activity of waste management without the necessary authorizations, with materials external to the site, including soil mixed with construction waste, which significantly altered the morphology and natural environment of the place. In addition, a Caterpillar excavator, also seized, was used to collect and transfer the material to other sites without any authorization.
Those responsible for these activities were reported at large to the Public Prosecutor's Office of Vallo della Lucania for unauthorized waste management and violations of landscape-environmental regulations. The area, bound by significant environmental protections, is in fact home to several nests of "common bee-eaters", a species protected by law 157/1992 and included in Annex II of the Bern Convention.
These birds, which nest between the end of April and May and leave in August, prefer humid areas such as those near watercourses. To avoid further damage to the environment and local fauna, the entire area was seized in a preventive manner. This measure is aimed at preventing the continuation of illegal activities and ensuring the protection of protected species in a critical period for their migration.
