The Navy described the operation as “the largest drug seizure in a maritime operation in the history of the institution,” without specifying the type of substance seized.
The operation, carried out by the Navy through the Mexican Navy acting as Coast Guard, also led to the seizure of six vessels and over 8.700 liters of fuel.
The vessels were intercepted in the maritime section southwest of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. During the operation, ships and a Panther helicopter were used to patrol and stop the suspicious vessels.
The first vessel encountered was carrying eight people who, upon seeing the Navy, attempted to throw bags containing drugs into the sea. The Navy managed to block this attempt, seizing over 2.100 kilograms of drugs and 1.250 liters of fuel.
Among the seized vessels there was also a semi-submersible
In subsequent operations, additional shipments totaling 6.200 kilograms of drugs and thousands of litres of fuel were seized, highlighting the extent of illicit trafficking in the area.
Among the seized vessels there was also a semi-submarine, difficult to detect by radar and visually. The success of the operation was possible thanks to the advanced training of the personnel, who performed a complex aerial boarding maneuver on a moving semi-submersible.
This operation has significantly affected organized crime networks: the value of the seizures exceeds 2 billion Mexican pesos.
In the first 18 days of the new administration, Navy forces have seized 11,7 tons of drugs, over 12.800 liters of fuel, arrested 37 individuals and seized several vessels used for illicit trafficking.
