A new episode of violence has shocked the community of Torre Annunziata. On Wednesday 8 October, in broad daylight, a courier was the victim of a brutal attack while he was carrying out his normal duties.
According to the reconstruction, the man had gone to a building in the city to make a delivery when he was lured into a trap. Pretending to be the recipient of the package, an individual invited him to go up to the first floor, where two accomplices were waiting for him, their faces covered by balaclavas.
As soon as the courier crossed the threshold, he was surrounded and attacked. One of the criminals threatened him with a knife, pointing it at his throat, while the other repeatedly stabbed him in the stomach.
Terrified and at the mercy of his attackers, the victim had no choice but to hand over the package, the money he had collected from previous deliveries, and all his personal belongings.
“We are shocked and worried,” the victim’s partner said, addressing MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli. “We ask for more controls and safety measures for workers, who risk their lives every day while doing their job honestly.”
The incident has sparked deep indignation among citizens and has brought the spotlight back to the growing insecurity in the area. Law enforcement is working to identify and capture those responsible for this vile ambush.
“They are becoming more and more cunning, brazen and violent, and therefore dangerous. It seems that they do not fear repercussions and being caught. How could it be otherwise if currently the police forces are not able, because they are undernumbered, to guarantee widespread control of the territory and even if they were arrested they would get away with a ridiculous sentence?
Much more needs to be done for security: first of all by significantly increasing the police force on the territory as had been promised by the Minister.” – these are the words of Borrelli.
