Few embody the concept of resilience like Michele Specchiale. Known on social media and beyond as the "bionic DJ," he's a man who decided to challenge life head-on, despite the challenges. An accident, a bionic arm, and a passion for music that has never stopped burning: his story is an extraordinary journey that blends music, technology, and the strength of human will.
Michele is not afraid to tell his story, not even when he thinks back to those painful moments that marked his youth: "I was 18 and an accident changed my life. I lost my arm. It was a huge trauma; for months I lived as if there was no path left for me.", he explains. "I had 6000 vinyl records, my passion for music was boundless, but it all ended in an instant. I sold everything, it was no longer a part of my life."
But what seemed like the end turned out to be just the beginning of a new phase. "During that time, I made many mistakes. I sold everything, I gave up on my dreams. But today I want to tell anyone who's listening to me not to make the same mistakes I did, to never give up on your dreams.", he states forcefully. "Life isn't easy, but with grit and determination you can get back on track, even after a fall."
So, with a bionic arm, Michele has returned to doing what he loves most: playing. And above all, for him it has become a source of pride: “It’s beautiful, colorful and I don’t hide it. I show it off, in the summer I even wear short sleeves! This is my arm, it’s part of me.”
"Love and my wife, a family that knows no limits."
Michele is not only a man of music, but also a husband and father. His love story with his wife is another chapter of hope and resilience. "I met my wife while I was doing repairs on an existing prosthetic. She, on the other hand, had just lost her legs. I helped her overcome her difficulty, and that's how it all began.", he says. "The love was immediate. She saw me, didn't judge me, appreciated me for who I am. And today we are a family that isn't afraid to show ourselves. Our girls see us as a family like any other. There's nothing strange about it for them; they see us as their parents, normal."
Her two daughters have grown up knowing that disability isn't an obstacle. "For them, my wife and I are like any other parents. I see their eyes filled with wonder when they look at us; to them, it's as if we were robots. But it's beautiful, because they don't see disability as a difficulty. It's normal."
A new obstacle: a second, terrible, accident
But it doesn't end there. Because in April, Michele experienced a new dramatic chapter in his life: a fall down the stairs, which caused him to break six ribs and perforate a lung: "For almost four minutes my lungs were full of blood, I saw death before my eyes again," tells.
"I had to cancel my plans to play in France for the Paris Paralympics. I was supposed to play for the athletes of the Italian Paralympic Committee, but I couldn't. It was like staring death in the face again." But the episode, though traumatic, reinforced in him the importance of living life to the fullest. "After that experience, I understood even more how precious life is. I can't tolerate those who waste it, those who self-destruct with drugs or alcohol. I was afraid, but that fear taught me to cherish every moment."
"Campania is my second home"
But the life of the 'bionic DJ' is also strongly linked to Campania, the land where he moved: "I'm from Sicily, and at first I didn't know if I'd be able to adapt. But then Naples welcomed me as if it were my own home.", says Michele. "The people here are incredible, warm, welcoming—that's how we are in the South. I've found a second family and a second home." Michele never had any doubts about his choice to live in Naples, where he even took part in a reality show and had the opportunity to get to know the city and its people better. "It's my acquired land and I will never leave it."
The Dream of a New Bionic Arm
The 'bionic DJ' is now also preparing to receive a new bionic arm, offered to him by the INAIL Prosthetics Center in Budrio. It will be a technologically advanced prosthesis, equipped with an electric elbow and completely waterproof: It may seem trivial, but being able to wash your hands under the tap without asking for help is a huge achievement for someone like me who lives with a disability. This prosthesis represents a step forward toward the independence we all desire., he explains.
However, Michele's generosity goes beyond his personal needs. "I know there are many less fortunate people still waiting for a prosthetic hand. If they were to call me to advance this hand, I'd be ready to say no. I want those who need me most to be put first: I've already had so much in life."
"I don't want others to make the same mistakes I did."
Its mission today is to convey hope, also through social media. "There, I show that even with just one hand, you can do seemingly impossible things. For example, I set a Guinness World Record for tying my shoelaces with just one hand. I do it to give hope to those who find themselves in the same situation. And, above all, to say: don't give up. Life is beautiful, even when it seems like there's no way out."
