A violent snowstorm surprised eight hikers, including a little girl, on Mount Cervati, the highest peak in Campania: the group was in a refuge in the “Ruscio” area of Vallevona, in the municipality of Sanza, to spend a weekend in the mountains but the sudden storm, characterized by wind and heavy snow, made their return impossible.
The alarm was raised late yesterday evening, immediately activating the rescue machine. The firefighters, coming from the detachments of Salerno, Policastro, Eboli and Avellino, went into action using a special vehicle, the "snowcat", essential to face the difficult weather conditions and reach the isolated refuge.
The rescue operations, conducted in extremely prohibitive conditions, ended only at 6 am. The eight hikers, although frightened, were rescued without suffering any injuries. The deputy mayor of Sanza, Tony Lettieri, closely followed all the phases of the operation and expressed his relief at the success of the operations.
“These were hours of great apprehension, but fortunately everything ended in the best possible way. Special thanks go to the professionalism of the firefighters and the fundamental support of the volunteers of the Civil Protection of Sanza – Gruppo Lucano and the association 'Le Tre T del Cervati'.”
The storm, which raged all night, made the intervention particularly complex. However, thanks to the timeliness and coordination of the rescuers, the worst was avoided, bringing the situation back under control and ensuring the safety of the hikers.
