“I have received assurances from the papal commissioner, Father Giorgio Silvestri, that to date there are no procedures for the suppression of the Monastery of Santa Chiara.
And, in any case, everything that happened concerns exclusively the internal life of the Order of the Poor Clares of Saint Clare, characterized by confidentiality and silence, which I believe must be safeguarded."
Thus begins the letter signed by the mayor of Ravello, Paolo Vuilleumier, addressed to the minority councilors Salvatore Di Martino and Giuliana Buonocore, in response to their request for a meeting of the municipal council on the matter.
Request rejected by the mayor for formal reasons, because it was signed by only two city councilors and not by three, as required by the regulation.
“No closure to dialogue, obviously – adds the mayor – I believe it is useful to convene a conference of group leaders, extended to include a representation of the Citizens' Committee pro Monastero and the Ravello Nostra association, which most recently felt it necessary to take a position on the matter in recent days.
The meeting, on the opportunity of which I am pleased to note the sharing of the Ravello va Oltre group, will be an opportunity to acquire knowledge of everything that has been done up to now in the roles and activities carried out by each one over time”.
The letter also retraces some stages of the story, which began in 2020: “At the time, the current group leader of Rinascita Ravellese, Salvatore De Martino, who held the position of mayor, did not consider, probably precisely to avoid causing an uproar, involving the city council, nor promoting public debates even though requested by the citizens.
The only acts that appear to have been adopted are a resolution of the municipal council and the sending of a letter to various religious authorities to which no response appears to have been received”.
