The MEP Andrea Cozzolino, placed under arrest yesterday evening as part of the investigation into the so-called Qatargate, will be heard by the judicial police and the new investigating judge this afternoon.
This was reported by the Belgian federal prosecutor's office. At the end of the double interrogation, the new judge - who today takes over the investigation after the step back announced yesterday by prosecutor Michel Claise - will have to decide whether to validate the arrest, order alternative measures or release the Italian politician.
The decision, the prosecutor's office says, "should come this evening". Cozzolino, dragged into the investigation by the revelations of the repentant former MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, had been reached by a European arrest warrant in Naples last February 10 and, before going to Belgium following the revocation of his house arrest, spent over four months in pre-trial detention in his home in Campania.
