An appeal to institutional sensitivity so that «through the approval of the amendments to the Highway Code for the extension of the regulations referring to the ZTL also to inter-municipal areas and extra-urban roads, you can determine to change the fate of our territory»
The Mayors of the Amalfi Coast they write to the Government to invoke the modification of the Highway Code and thus authorize the entry into force of the territorial ZTL which would limit vehicular traffic along the Amalfi state road 163.
The letter, sent today, is a heartfelt appeal to definitively resolve an unsustainable situation for decades that suffocates the liveability of those who, by luck or necessity, live in one of the most enchanting and delicate places in Italy.
"The territory now awaits answers that can no longer be postponed: we are certain that you will be able to provide them in a decisive manner, also in light of the imminent parliamentary procedures that concern the revision of the Highway Code" write the 14 mayors in the letter sent to the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and to the Ministers of the Interior and Infrastructure and Transport as well as to their respective deputy ministers and undersecretaries.
«We appeal to your institutional sensitivity so that, through the approval of the amendments to the Highway Code for the extension of the regulations referring to the ZTL also to inter-municipal areas and extra-urban roads, you can determine to favorably change the fate of our territory – write, in the shared document, all the Mayors of the Coast –
For years, in fact, we have been committed to proposing and adopting measures aimed at limiting traffic along the state road 163 “Amalfitana” (the only arterial road connecting the seaside resorts of an area with a very high tourist vocation), a road that still today follows, in an almost identical manner, the original route and sections of the original mule track inaugurated in the mid-nineteenth century».
The news of the last decades, in fact, testifies to the many inconveniences generated by the enormous flow of vehicles that crowd the Amalfi Coast for at least eight months of the year. Inconveniences that, due to the particular conformation of the territory and the road artery, also devoid of interchange points, are not limited to the mere flow of traffic but result in problems of livability, safety and health.
Hence the need to limit the flow of vehicles in transit on the SS 163 through a Limited Traffic Zone to be applied to a larger area than the classic historic city center, a territorial ZTL.
«This proposal has become an institutional agreement between the 14 Municipalities of the Coast, the Campania Region, the Province of Salerno and Anas (under the direction of the Prefect of Salerno, HE Dr. Francesco Russo) and is supported by a wide range of trade associations (hotel operators and environmentalists) as well as by a collection of signatures of more than 10 thousand citizens – explain the mayors of the Coast in the appeal also forwarded to the presidents of the parliamentary groups of the Chamber and Senate, to the Deputies and Senators elected in the Campania Region.
Following this agreement, the Campania Region financed – through the instrumental body ACAMIR – the drafting of the Technical-economic feasibility project necessary for the implementation of the intervention called “Territorial ZTL for traffic restriction on the SS163”, the final version of which was presented, on 31 March 2022, at the interinstitutional table at the Prefecture of Salerno».
By virtue of this agreement, the mayors also recall that the Campania Region has expressed its willingness to finance the creation of the technological infrastructure, as a system for monitoring access and regulating traffic on the Amalfi Coast, for an estimated amount of 2 million euros.
"The requested regulatory innovation, already under consideration by the Ministry of Transport, would allow us to follow up on the implementation of a system that represents a structural solution and, moreover, would not entail new or greater burdens for public finances - the mayors finally explain - it would not represent an obligation but a faculty granted to the territories, enhancing the concept of autonomy for the benefit of citizens and tourists; finally, it would allow us to create a model to be replicated in other territories of great attractiveness and with characteristics that suffer, more than others, the harmful effects of overcrowding".
