A 26-year-old Malian citizen, known to law enforcement for drug-related crimes, was killed this morning at dawn in Verona, in the Porta Nuova area.
The man had attempted to attack with a kitchen knife first the municipal officers and then a policeman on duty at the train station. According to the reconstruction, the episode began around 5 in the morning.
After damaging the windows of some shops, the young man attacked a patrol of the Municipal Police. Two hours later, he attempted to stab a Polfer policeman who, in response, fired three shots, fatally wounding him in the chest.
The officer, with many years of service, performed cardiac massage until help arrived, but the 26-year-old died. Witnesses reported that the young man “he seemed possessed”The autopsy, scheduled for the next 48 hours, will clarify the Malian's psychophysical conditions.
The Porta Nuova area has been the scene of numerous crime episodes in recent months. In July, the Police had carried out 26 arrests and seven residence bans. The episode has reignited the debate on security.
