Trenitalia is introducing significant innovations to improve the traveler experience starting January 1, 2025. In a landmark change, passengers who purchase an e-ticket will automatically receive compensation in their account in the event of delays. "We are working to facilitate the travel experience for passengers," said Trenitalia CEO Luigi Corradi.
How automatic refund works
The new system provides that, in the event of a delay of more than 60 minutes, the compensation will be automatically credited to the card used for the purchase. Passengers will receive 25% of the ticket price for delays between 60 and 119 minutes and 50% for delays of more than 120 minutes, all without the need to send any request. The credit will be made within 30 days of the trip.
News for high speed
Frecce customers will also benefit from an update. Starting in September, they will be able to use “Smart Refund,” an instant refund method that simplifies the process of verifying and approving requests. Refunds can be issued either as a sum of money or in the form of a bonus, at the customer’s choice.
Innovation with Tap&Tap
In addition, Trenitalia has presented the “Tap&Tap” system, which allows you to pay for your trip by simply placing your contactless payment card near the validator. This service is currently available on some lines and will be extended nationwide.

I hope this automatic refund system works smoothly, because sometimes new technologies are not always as effective as promised. It is important that passengers receive what they are entitled to in a simple way.
The idea of automatic refund seems very interesting and useful for travelers. However, I wonder if it works well in practice and if there will be technical problems as often happens with other systems. We'll see.
