Naples – Local police are conducting a major operation to combat the illegal tradition of burning the "cippo di Sant'Antonio" (St. Anthony's memorial stone) during the celebration of the saint's day.

This custom, which involves the lighting of unauthorized bonfires, has come under the scrutiny of the authorities with a series of targeted interventions in various areas of the city.

This morning, in Parco Mazzini, a complex owned by Acer in Calata Capodichino, officers from the Stella and Iaes-Investigativa Operational Units discovered and removed a massive pile of wood, household goods and trees, destined to be burned. The action was conducted in collaboration with Asia and Napoli Servizi personnel, who proceeded to completely clear the area.

Similar operations were carried out in other sensitive areas of the city. In Piazza Santa Maria Ognibene, in the Spanish Quarters, approximately 7,5 million quintals of wood and various materials, while in Piazza Gian Battista Vico, among the flowerbeds of the gardens, wooden platforms and pine trees hidden for the same purpose were discovered. In the Sanità district, however, the interventions were concentrated on Via San Gennaro dei Poveri, Via Sanità and Piazza Sanità.

Seizures in all the neighborhoods of the city

In total, the Local Police carried out six interventions, removing large quantities of materials that could have represented a danger to public safety and the environment. The operation made it possible to prevent fires and risky situations related to blazes, a practice that is not only dangerous but also harmful to urban heritage.

The authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring compliance with urban and environmental safety regulations. “We will continue to monitor and act with determination to avoid behavior that could endanger citizens or cause damage to public and private property,” said a spokesperson for the Local Police.
