A TikTok spokesperson, contacted by AFP, called “pure fiction” the rumors that Chinese authorities had considered the possibility of Elon Musk acquiring their activities in the United States.
Word is spreading because the popular social media platform could be banned in the United States by the end of the week.
“We cannot be expected to comment on pure fiction,” the Chinese company's spokesman argued. Bloomberg had speculated yesterday that senior Chinese officials had already begun discussing contingency plans for TikTok, as part of a broader discussion about how to interact with Donald Trump's administration, and that one of those discussions would have involved Musk.
TikTok's operations in the United States are valued at between $40 billion and $50 billion.
