Capaccio Paestum – A judicial earthquake shakes local politics with the arrest of 10 people, including the former mayor of Capaccio Paestum and former president of the Province of Salerno, Franco Alfieri, and the entrepreneur Roberto Squecco, considered an exponent of the entrepreneurial wing of the Marandino Camorra clan.
According to the investigations of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) of Salerno, which culminated in today's operation, Squecco allegedly stated in an intercepted conversation that he had "had Alfieri elected".
"I got this gentleman elected, I brought him here. He had failed in Agropoli, I took him from there and brought him here", the entrepreneur, already convicted for mafia-style criminal association, is said to have declared.
Squecco's statements, contained in the order of the Judge for Preliminary Investigations (GIP) of the Court of Salerno Annamaria Ferraiolo, reveal an alleged "pact" between the two, dating back to the 2019 elections, centered on the management of the Kennedy beach in Paestum.
Squecco would also have commissioned a dynamite attack against Alfieri, guilty of having violated the agreements made. The entrepreneur claims that Alfieri, in order to accept the candidacy for mayor, would have made the candidacy of his wife in an electoral list a condition, then effectively elected as a city councilor.
However, according to Squecco, Alfieri later distanced himself due to the judicial measures that had affected him, supporting the project to demolish and secure the beach.
The DDA operation led to the execution of 10 precautionary measures: 4 in prison and 6 under house arrest, including that of Franco Alfieri. Investigations are still ongoing to shed light on all the details of this intricate affair.
