Rome – “In Naples we will focus on Scampia and Secondigliano, and one of the most significant interventions that we intend to carry out is to clear and reclaim the area of the Roma camp on Via Cupa Perillo in Scampia and to build a rugby field in its place, to be entrusted to the management of the Fiamme Oro”.
Prime Minister Giorgia said it Meloni at the meeting at Palazzo Chigi on the Suburbs Plan, illustrating the interventions in the eight areas involved.
“This is just a small glimpse of what we intend to do in the coming months and which is part of a broader strategy that will see the government engaged on the front line, exactly as happened in Caivano, where every articulation of the State moved, did its part and gave its contribution.
It is a job that we are committed to carrying forward to continue to challenge ourselves and to demonstrate that a policy that tries to solve problems – even the most difficult ones – at the cost of failure is much more serious”, he concluded.
The dismantling and redevelopment of the area where the Cupa Perillo Roma camp in Scampia currently stands and the regeneration of the Berlingieri district in Secondigliano were the topics that the mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, brought to the table at Palazzo Chigi today where he had a meeting with the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, the Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council, Alfredo Mantovano, and the Government Commissioner for the suburbs, Fabio Ciciliano.
Manfredi stressed that with the Presidency of the Council and the commissioner structure “we worked well to identify interventions that are truly significant”. Regarding the Roma camp, Manfredi explained that “it is a long-standing issue and that thanks to this intervention, also using a part of the resources that were already available and never used, it will be possible to relocate the people who live in the Roma camp: it is a very complex project that had already been developed with the territory and perfectly shared by the associations and also by the Roma”.
The plan includes the relocation of approximately 300 people currently living in the camp through the redevelopment of confiscated assets and the identification of alternative housing solutions, the remediation of waste, estimated at approximately 11 thousand tons "accumulated over 30 years between illegal dumping and illegal activities", the construction of junctions on the perimeter road leading to Scampia and the redevelopment of the remaining spaces with the creation of green areas and a rugby pitch.
As for the Berlingieri district in Secondigliano, a public housing district built in the 60s, the project includes the redevelopment of the buildings which today – the mayor highlighted – “present significant maintenance problems, but above all all public facilities such as schools, a commercial area, sports areas and green areas will be built”.
Added to this is the redevelopment of the swimming pool adjacent to the area. In terms of necessary resources, a total of 60 million euros have been allocated between government funds, funds previously assigned to the Prefecture of Naples, and funds from the municipal administration. The Government's final plan to give formal approval to the projects illustrated today - as far as we know - should arrive within a few weeks so that work can begin immediately.
