An earthquake of magnitude 4.4, the strongest in the last 40 years, struck the Campi Flegrei area during the night, spreading panic among the population and causing damage.
The seismic event, which was also clearly felt in Naples and in various areas of the province, forced many residents to pour into the streets, while the sirens of emergency vehicles resounded in the area.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Campi Flegrei, at a depth of 2.5 km, with a magnitude of 4.4. In Pozzuoli, the Fire Department rescued a person who was slightly injured due to the collapse of a false ceiling. Damage from debris was also reported in Bagnoli and Fuorigrotta, where a woman was rescued after the collapse of a false ceiling in her home.
Fear and discomfort
The shock, felt as particularly intense in some areas, has generated great fear among the population, already tried by the frequency of seismic events in the area. Moments of tension occurred at the former NATO base of Bagnoli, where some citizens forced the gates to spend the night in their cars, due to the closure of the area.
Checks and safety measures
The mayors of the affected municipalities and the prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, have announced the start of checks on the stability of the buildings, starting with the schools, which will remain closed. The Vesuvius Observatory has highlighted how the earthquake was characterized by "serious accelerations, never recorded before", confirming its violence.
Train circulation stopped from Piazza Garibaldi
Train circulation blocked at Naples Central Station. Ferrovie dello Stato has started an inspection along the entire route and therefore no trains leave or arrive at Piazza Garibaldi. We are waiting for the technicians' work. The time when train circulation will resume is unknown.
Seismic swarm
The main shock was followed by several aftershocks, the strongest of which was of magnitude 1.6. The last shock, of magnitude 1.1, was recorded at 3.26. There were 7 aftershocks in total.
