One of the 5 classes called to compose the Popular Jury of the GiovedìScienza National Award is from Naples, the competition organized by the CentroScienza Onlus Association that since 2011 has given visibility to the work of young Italian researchers under 35 who with their activity contribute to the development and innovation in our country.
An opportunity not only for the awarded researchers but also for the high school students from all over Italy selected and called to compose the Popular Jury on the occasion of the final competition held on May 23 in Turin. In fact, during the months preceding the awarding of the prize, the students had the opportunity to participate in an educational training course, conducted by CentroScienza Onlus in collaboration with a local scientific body, aimed at teaching young people the importance of scientific dissemination and the most effective methods for communicating science in a clear, simple and direct way.
The 4A bio of the ITIA Righi of Naples is one of the classes involved and had the opportunity to work with the IDIS Città della Scienza Foundation, a Neapolitan body partner of CentroScienza in the initiative.
The students of the Neapolitan school were asked to evaluate the presentation speeches of the finalist researchers competing to assign two prizes to the most deserving:
● GiovedìScienza Award assigned to dissemination, the winner receives a cash prize of €5.000 and will be included in the programming of the next edition of GiovedìScienza (2023/2024), with a dedicated conference.
● Elena Benaduce Special Award, dedicated to research works that stand out for having direct or important repercussions on people's well-being and quality of life. The award is given to the one among the ten finalists and in the opinion of the popular jury, who has presented the research work that shows the most attention to people's well-being or can more directly have an impact on improving the quality of life. The winner receives a cash prize of €3.000.
“We are happy to support once again the national award “GiovedìScienza”: among the missions of Città della Scienza there is precisely that of promoting the birth of a citizenship that can overcome the gap between society and the scientific world – declares Prof. Riccardo Villari, President of the IDIS Città della Scienza Foundation. – We promote on a daily basis a communication of science that can stimulate and at the same time foster in the new generations a love of knowledge, the development of critical sense and talent: essential factors for social and economic growth”.
“On behalf of the class and the Class Council 4^ABio of the ITI “A. Righi” of Naples, I would like to express our personal gratitude for the opportunity offered to the students of the aforementioned class to participate as jurors in the 37th edition of the “GiovedìScienza” award as well as in the assignment of the “Elena Benaduce” award. – declares Professor Gelsomina Tortora of the ITI “A. Righi” of Naples -. The training course allowed students to acquire valuable skills related to the effectiveness of communication and to understand that effective communication requires that words, body and voice work together in unison to convey their message. They were therefore prepared to participate, in a conscious way, as judges in the final competition”.
The GiovedìScienza National Award was created in 2011 to encourage research protagonists to communicate science, to offer them resources and tools to disseminate their research.
Twelve editions involved 700 candidates, 360 women and 340 men. 80 applications were received for the 2023 edition, 53 female researchers and 27 male researchers, from the main Italian universities and research centers. 135 referees evaluated the candidates and selected the list of ten finalists based on scientific merit.
