In the province of Avellino, a woman was reported by the Carabinieri for having committed an aggravated fraud against a 60-year-old from Caposele.
The scam, known as an “internet romance scam,” saw the victim send over 40 euros to the scammer in just under two years. The scammer, an Italian woman who emigrated to America 60 years ago, met the XNUMX-year-old through a social network.
After establishing a virtual relationship, she began asking for money by exploiting her children's health problems and suggesting that she wanted to return to Italy to start a life with the man.
The victim, exploiting the 60-year-old's emotionality, managed to have him send many small transfers until reaching a total sum of over 40 thousand euros.
Only after being visited at home by the commander of the Caposele station, the man found the courage to report the scam to the investigators. After the investigations of the Carabinieri, the scammer was reported at large to the Avellino Prosecutor's Office for aggravated fraud.
