Naples. A tourist was struck by a moped while calmly crossing the pedestrian crossing on Via Nuova Marina. The accident, which occurred on the evening of October 28th, has once again highlighted the dangers of this thoroughfare, already the scene of numerous road tragedies.
A few weeks ago, on this very spot, Valeria Vertaglio, a 42-year-old woman, lost her life after being hit by a car while driving her children to school. Her tragic death had profoundly shocked the Neapolitan community, but apparently the lesson wasn't enough.
Yet another accident involving a foreign tourist casts a dark shadow over the city and raises questions about road safety. Eyewitnesses report hearing a loud bang and seeing the tourist's body thrown onto the pavement. Emergency services were immediately alerted, and the man, in critical condition, was transported to the nearest hospital. His condition remains serious.
The incident has sparked outrage among citizens, tired of watching these constant tragedies unfold helplessly. Deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli, always at the forefront of the fight for road safety, went to the scene of the accident to express his solidarity with the victim and to denounce the unacceptable situation.
"We can't continue like this," Borrelli declared. "Urgent intervention by the institutions is needed to make our streets safer. We cannot allow more innocent people to lose their lives due to the folly of a few."
The Neapolitan community gathers around the family of the injured tourist and mourns the loss of Valeria Vertaglio, hoping that this latest tragedy can finally shake consciences and lead to concrete change.
“They are racing like crazy, they use the bus lane for no reason, they make risky maneuvers for no reason at all, even when the road is clear. Right before our eyes another accident was happening, between a car and a scooter. Both were going at very high speed. All this on a Monday when there is very little traffic, let alone on the weekend.
Yes, of course, there are no controls, but is that the only problem? Here it seems that the rules are optional, very few respect them, in fact, to tell the truth, I would say that many, given that they completely ignore the highway code, have bought their license. A man from the area told us that, while he was crossing with his dog on the crosswalk, a man on a scooter, who was riding the bus lane, was about to run him over. Adding insult to injury.
He risked being run over and was even verbally abused. The world turned upside down where those who respect the rules must be subservient to those who break them. It is a world that must be changed, first in our heads, and then with strict rules and exemplary punishments for those who do not respect them. Human life is at stake here,” Borrelli said.
