Naples. The first-degree trial in the Second Scampia Feud ended with a mixed verdict. Charged with a series of murders, many mafia bosses, including Cesare Pagano, managed to avoid life sentences and the more severe sentences requested by the Prosecutor's Office.

The judge, in the trial that was held with the abbreviated rite, evaluating the evidence and the testimonies, sentenced Cesare Pagano, Renato Napoleone and Carmine Pagano to 30 years in prison each. Other bosses, such as Rito Calzone and Davide Francescone, received sentences of 20 years.

However, some defendants, including Raffaele Musolino, Salvatore Petriccione, Nunzio Talotti and Luca Raiano, were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The investigations, conducted by the Carabinieri, have revealed a detailed picture of the feud, which arose from a split within the Di Lauro clan. The decision of the faction Vanella Grassi to ally with the Amato-Pagano clan triggered a violent war for control of the territory.

There are eight murders at the centre of this trial:

  • Giuseppe Pica of the Di Lauros (March 14, 2007)
  • Francesco Cardillo of Di Lauro (March 14, 2007)
  • Lucio De Lucia of Di Lauro (March 21, 2007)
  • Patrizio De Vitale (May 31, 2007)
  • Luigi Giannino from Vinella Grassi (June 13, 2007)
  • Salvatore Ferrara of the Di Lauros (September 25, 2007)
  • Luigi Magnetti from Vinella (September 25, 2007)
  • Carmine Fusco of the Di Lauros (February 9, 2008)
